THE STAR CIRCLED BANNER
Newsletter for the Gen. John C. Vaughn Camp 2089
Our Camp meets every first Tuesday of the month in Etowah, at the historic old Etowah Enterprise Building, now the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall, located on Ohio Street, in the 600 block, directly across the street from the cleaners. Our meeting begins at 6:00 pm and usually runs till about 8:00 pm to 8:30 or so. The public is always invited to attend our meetings. You’ll find likeminded people who are interested in their Confederate ancestry, especially as that relates to their military, naval, or governmental service. Our members are always happy to befriend you, and to help you confirm your ancestry, or to discover likely places for documentation showing where your ancestor fought, where he may have been incarcerated as a POW, length of service, etc. We endeavour to schedule speakers at every meeting who are well-versed in particular aspects of Confederate history. These talks and lectures are free and we welcome the entire family to come and enjoy these historical presentations. Plan to attend our meetings each first Tuesday of the month, where we sincerely believe you’ll be uplifted, informed, and edified by our Camp activities. We always have refreshments on hand, so come hungry!
PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT’s COMMENTS ON ROBERT E LEE
At the 12 June 1936 unveiling of the General Robert E Lee Memorial statue in Dallas, Texas, Franklin D. Roosevelt said: “I am very happy to take part in this unveiling of the statue of General Robert E Lee. All over the United States we recognize him as a great leader of men, as a great general. But, also, all over the United States I believe that we recognize him as something much more than that. We recognize Robert E Lee as one of our greatest American Christians and one of our greatest American gentlemen.”

Fellow Compatriots,
It is hard for me to grasp the fact that
we are nearing the end of the first quarter of 2010, as well as the first quarter
of my first term as Commander.
Looking back over the last few months we have seen many positive things
happening in our Camp. We have had the blessing of a wonderful facility to host
our regular monthly meetings as well as special functions through out the year
to come. Already the new location has afforded us the privilege of having Dr.
Mike Bradley as our guest speaker
as well as a great time of fellowship with members and the public. We are
looking forward to more positive advances for our camp in the upcoming months
and hope that we can continue to depend upon the interest and devotion of our
members, for we do what we do, not for our glory or honor, but to bring honor
to the names and memories of those who have given us such a wonderful heritage.
I would also like to thank again Dr.
Bradley, and all of the many people (men and women) who worked so hard to help
make the February meeting such a grand success, I have only received positive feedback .
Thanks Again!
I Remain, Your Humble
Servant,
James A. Staton

"Man is
looking for better methods. God is looking for better men. Men are God's
methods." Edward McKendree Bounds, Chaplain-3rd Missouri Infantry CSA
First of all I would
like to thank Commander Staton for giving me the opportunity to serve as your
Chaplain. I take this position very seriously as it is a ministry in service to
my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I chose the above quote from Em Bounds
because not only was he one of our faithful Chaplains, but he was a man of
prayer. Rev. Bounds wrote extensively on the subject of prayer and I hope to
share much of his material with you in future messages. I believe in prayer and
know the power of it in my own life. Please let me know if you would like
prayer for any reason. I am part of a prayer ministry with the Chaplain of the
Army of Tennessee(SCV) and can have hundreds of people from all over the
country praying for you immediately. The scriptures tell us to bear one
anothers' burdens and that is what we do through prayer. This is a good example
of men being God's method. Be sure to add your phone numbers and/or email
addresses to the roster so that I can keep in touch with you. Please dont
hesitate to call on me anytime. May the peace of God be with you all. Deo
Vindice!
